BODs in ColoRADo

November 28, 2020

Annual BOD trip was coming up. The Dudes decided to meet up with John in Colorado for some shredding at the Frisco Bike Park. Between having a wrecked ankle and kids that weekend I wasn’t even really thinking about going. I kept getting harassed by all the dudes saying I have to make it happen. Not one to let a dude or dudes down that is what I did. Luckily the dudes had my back and helped out tremendously. So plans were arranged and we set off on our 7 hour car ride from Utah to Colorado. Eric, Tony, and Jason in Eric’s truck. Scott in his sequoia. (Covid precautions with a new job). And then my two kids and I in my sequoia. And Luke and his girlfriend Alesha decided to tag along on their trek to New York. First stop, Starbucks! Because Scott is basic! Now to Colorado. We had great weather and the drive went really smooth. 3 movies later we were at Edwards Skatepark. A must stop if you are a BMXer, skater, hell even a rollerblader, traveling down I70. They did such a good job on this park. With a large snakerun bowl section, a street section, and a big bowl with a capsule, everyone will find something to shred. And thats just what the dudes did. Most of the time was spent trying to get upside down in the capsule, since we don’t have one in Utah, with Scott getting the most inverted.

Back on the road and to our next stop Minturn Bike Park. Minturn is a rad little town in Eagle County, Colorado. Like really little. But they have a bike park! So we stopped. Oh and this is where we met up with John and it felt like no time had passed since we last saw him. The big line having wooden lips I didn’t have huge expectations for good riding. I didn’t even get my bike out for a bit. I hauled the kids and their bikes over to one of their couple different pump tracks. Minturn did a really good job with what they had. Lots of different lines and different features to ride. I looked over and saw the Dudes getting busy on the big line. The kids were doing great so I grabbed my bike and headed to the top. With a couple cool entry jumps and the wooden lips actually being, well good, it was no problem getting through the whole line. The big wall ride at the end was a nice touch Minturn. Dudes rode hard and I ended up mostly filming as my ankle was bugging me and I didn’t want to make it worst before our final destination. Highlight for me was the rolling shot of Eric in the sunset with Scott on his 6. A final train with all the dudes then packed back up in the cars. We hit this little Restaurant/Bar on the way out “Magustos”. Weird vibe walking into the place as I wasn’t really sure if we walked into the back door or the bar section or walked in on someones planned event. But managed to finally find someone who worked there that pointed us to some seating outside and said take your pick. With a big menu, food for kids, and some good beers we had a good time reminiscing about the day and making the plan for the night.

Back in the cars we started to head into Frisco. John was kind enough to book us two camp spots right next to each other. We rolled in at dark and set up camp. Everyone was pretty tired from the long drive and multiple shreds spots so we pretty much got cozied up and went to bed. Glad we brought our flannel jammies because it was a cold night!

Waking up to some breathtaking views we gathered around the picnic table and started making some breakfast. Some crappy camping pancakes, eggs, and bacon ended up being pretty decent. A couple cold brews for the guys and Tony even made us a couple cups of hot coffee for everyone. Just what we needed before heading to the bike park. I was excited and had some pretty big expectations for it with all the hype the Dudes that have been there were talking about. We left camp with bikes in the trucks and headed over the hill and down into the bike park. And what a gorgeous drive over looking the lake.

Pulling into the park I was blown away. You first come across the huge down hill mtb course, followed by the massive bowl type skatepark, and then into the dirt jumps! And wow what jumps they are! Got out, took a look around, and unpacked the bikes. They had a cool little pump track and some really small lines for the kids. And being dad, of course that was the best part about the trip for me watching the kids ride! But I jumped on the bike and started getting warmed up on the small line. Hats off to the guys maintaining the park! Every line, every transfer, every berm was dialed. And not to mention them making their presence riding and constantly watering making sure it stayed pristine. They had a nice shade area with a table so we had lunch. Bunch of PBJs and Apples for everyone. Being a Saturday the place was packed. Lots of little kids, tons of parents that were all stoked on life, and then some shredders. The word on the street was that this was going to be pretty much the last weekend of the season for them and man did everyone come out. The afternoon/evening session was insane and so fun to watch! With the big line firing and guys and Dudes throwing down it was quite the extravaganza. The first two jumps in big line were pretty straight forward fun jumps. Followed by a left hip, to right hip, that you could adjust your speed on if you were going too slow or fast by aiming for the inside or outside. Then a down hill to a good size straight jump that was very trickable. And then a massive down hill to the final jump that was completely massive. But just hang on and get ready to get sent to the moon. By far my favorite jump there! The amount of hang time was ridiculous. And the only jump that I actually went down on. Wanting to get punted I pulled back a little too hard. But having enough time in the air I got to go through what was happening in my head. “Oh man I’m up here, I don’t think I’m going to make it, ditch the bike, going too fast to run out, tuck and roll, wait don’t land on bad ankle, oh shit” and bam! A nice tuck and roll with only minor scratches, I was back at the top riding with everyone again. Everyone had a blast and rode really really good. It was so fun riding all day with the majority of the Dudes. It was an amazing session for Frisco to cap off the season.

Everyone was super excited to try out the Outer Range brewery in town. Apparently so was everyone else in Frisco that weekend because the line was out the door. So we just ended up next door at Pure Kitchen which probably turned out much better than the pub! Super good food but also came with a price tag. After we did stop by the brewery for some beers to go. Back at camp was nothing but rad times circled around a space heater with a couple drinks with the Dudes. Colorado was on a fire ban which was such a bummer. Stayed up late visiting as we knew we would be going our separate ways come tomorrow.

Tomorrow came and we opted to shred some more before leaving town. The jumps were still amazing and so fun. The session was a little more mellow than the other night and had a good laid back vibe. I hate writing and this story is probably long enough. So we rode, said our goodbyes to John, Luke and Alesha, packed everything up, and headed home. It was an amazing trip and I am so glad I joined in. I couldn’t of done it without the Dudes as having two kids made a 3 day camping/riding trip a ton of work. But hindsight I wouldn’t have changed a single thing about the whole experience! Hope you enjoy the video.

Love, KC
